NEWLAND — Avery Vikings Football is keeping itself busy during the offseason with a number of preseason practices, scrimmages and 7-on-7 competitions in an effort to ensure they are as ready and dangerous as possible for the beginning of the regular season, which kicks off in less than a month.

The team is hosting a round of 7-on-7 passing league competitions on Thursday, July 25, at MacDonald Stadium. The Big Red are set to square off against Elizabethton (Tenn.), East Burke and East Rutherford. Action is slated to begin at 6 p.m.

Next up is a home scrimmage at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, where the Vikings will play host to Patton, Enka, Rosman and Happy Valley (Tenn.). Three days later, on Friday, Aug. 16, the team is set to travel for the Wilkes County Jamboree in Millers Creek, where they will scrimmage against East Wilkes.

The first day of official NCHSAA regular season fall practice is slated to begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1. Avery will host Ashe County to open its regular season schedule at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at MacDonald Stadium.
