What a difference six months make. Following the postponement of high school football season last August in North Carolina by the NC High School Athletic Association due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Avery High School football program took to the turf of MacDonald Stadium drenched in sunshine but surrounded by a blanket of snow for its first official day of practice on Monday, Feb. 1, in Newland. With a mid-30s high temperature more indicative of the closing weeks of normal football season, Vikings players and coaches braved the elements to begin its quest for a conference and state championship. Avery opens its season on Friday, Feb. 26, at home against Asheville Christian Academy.
