BANNER ELK — A preliminary site plan for the proposed development at the old Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk has been presented to the town’s Planning Board.
Town Manager Rick Owen said a detailed set of plans will be brought to the board at a later time. The board will give input on those plans before sending them to the Board of Adjustment, which will have to approve a Conditional Use Permit for the project to proceed.
The presentation, which was given by Charlotte design firm Urban Design Partners, follows an October presentation of early tentative plans to the board in October 2018 to turn the property into a mixed-use development on the 10-acre lot.
The property was purchased by Landsdowne Village of Banner Elk in August of 2018. Landsdowne is an LLC created by Steven Cuff of Steven Cuff Construction.
Several ideas for use of the property were floated at the original presentation in October, and Owen indicated the plans are still to create a mixed-use development on the site that could include a mix of retail businesses, restaurants and a hotel.
The site has remained largely untouched in the nearly two decades since the property was sold and the hospital moved to its current Linville facility.
