Students from area middle schools join in MECHS math competition

On March 17, students from Cane River, East Yancey, Cranberry, Avery and Harris middle schools traveled to Mayland Early College High School to take part in a Math 1 competition. Once the tests were completed, the students were placed in groups and asked to build bridges made of straws to meet the requirements given. The bridges were then tested for strength by hanging a cup with various penny amounts to see which bridge could stand up to the weight. Pictured top left is first-place winner of $50, Chloe Cook, $25 second-place winner Kaitlyn Chrisawn and $15 third-place winner Grace Willis. Pictured top right are participants Caityn Pittman, Eilidh Winters and Dalton Ramsey, and pictured right are participants Kayla Ledford, John Hedrick and Ivy Young.
