BANNER ELK — In remembrance of Reverend Edgar Tufts, Lees-McRae College Summer Theatre program will soon host its performance of “From the Mountaintop: The Edgar Tufts Story.”
The musical, written by Janet Speer with musical direction from John Thomas Oaks, details the life of Tufts, a Presbyterian minister who was an integral member of the Banner Elk community as he founded Banner Elk Presbyterian Church, Lees-McRae College, Cannon Memorial Hospital and Grandfather Home for Children.
On Sunday, June 9, Broyhill Theater hosted a free gallery exhibit which edified and educated visitors on subjects such as life in early Banner Elk and the life and legacy of the Tufts family.
A meet-and-greet was held in the adjacent Miller Commons where visitors could speak with current members of the Tufts family. The event culminated in a special preview of “From the Mountaintop,” performed by cast members of the Lees-McRae Summer Theatre production.
The show will premiere July 11 in Hayes Auditorium and Broyhill Theater, with additional performances at 7 p.m. on July 12, 13 and 16, and afternoon shows at 2 p.m. on July 14, 16 and 17.
Tickets for the show will become available online and at the box office on June 19.
