MARION — The McDowell Board of Education at its most recent meeting approved former Avery head football coach Darrell Brewer to be the McDowell High School new head football coach.
The McDowell News reported that Brewer takes over for Andy Morgan, who resigned after posting a three-year record of 11-24.
Brewer coached the Avery football team from 2004-15. He finished with an overall record of 68-71 and made the 1A state playoffs each season. Included during his tenure were a conference championship in 2005 and a pair of trips (2005 and 2010) by the Vikings to the third round of the NCHSAA 1-AA state playoffs.
The 2005 season proved to be Brewer's best at Avery, when the Vikings finished with a school-record 11 wins, posting an 11-3 overall record before falling in a last-second 28-21 third-round playoff loss at Murphy.
Brewer takes over a program that has struggled in recent times. The Titans have an overall record of 44-124 since the 2006 season. McDowell’s last winning season was 2012 when the Titans finished 8-4, which was an improvement after they hit a low point in 2010 with a 0-11 mark.
The Titans finished the 2018 season with a 4-8 overall record and was 2-5 in the Northwestern Conference. McDowell still reached the playoffs, but lost in the first round to Mooresville 51-10.
McDowell struggled defensively in several of its NWC games. The Titans allowed a minimum of 40 points in four of their five conference losses.
Avery and McDowell have played one another annually since 2013, but the teams are not scheduled to face one another this fall or in 2020.
