PINEOLA — The Avery County Chamber of Commerce has received $100,000 in matching grant funding, which it has to expand broadband beginning in the Pineola-Linville Falls area.
The chamber applied for the grant because a nonprofit was required to apply for the grant funding, and the county was ineligible to do so. North Carolina Wireless, an ISP based out of Hickory, was selected to receive the grant. The grant funds will not require any expenses on the county’s end.
In a matching grant, the grantee receives grant monies from the grantor in exchange for putting in money of its own. In total, this grant could result in a $200,000 investment in Broadband expansion, predicted to impact more than 90 residences.
The funds can not be used for construction costs. Examples of construction work given in the agreement include tower installation and trenching.
