Avery Vikings 2011 alumnus Colton Blackburn recently completed his first season as a Chanticleer at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.
Blackburn led the Vikings in rushing yards in his senior season, was recruited as a fullback and tight end and earned a scholarship to continue his career at the collegiate level with Coastal.
Although he was redshirted this past fall, Blackburn took part in practices and grew as a player since his departure from Newland.
"It was exciting and challenging, stepping out on the field for the first 5 a.m. workout of the season knowing you were at a different level of competition," Blackburn said. "I have grown a lot as a player, a student and as an individual. We had a great season this fall, and I am looking forward to next year."
Blackburn has excelled through his first semester of college academics. The business major earned a 3.4 grade point average last fall.
Colton is the son of Rick and Kim Blackburn of Newland.
