James “Jim” Floyd Greene
James “Jim” Floyd Greene, 55, of Elk Park, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at his residence.
A native of Avery County, he was born Aug. 25, 1956, a son of the late Floyd and Wilma Coffey Greene.
A devoted man of God, he was the minister of Minneapolis Christian Church for more than 10 years and had previously served as an elder of Heaton Christian Church.
Greene was the general manager and host of Glory 1130 AM WECR and loved every minute of his ministry on the radio. He was the “chaplain” of Avery County and public address announcer for Viking sports. Before becoming “The Voice of Avery County,” he was the “Breadman,” when he worked for Kerns and Gate Manager for Grandfather Mountain. Greene also enjoyed a good round of golf and was an avid sports fan. His sense of humor and joyful spirit were one like no other.
Along with his parents, his loving wife, Connie Bowlick Greene, preceded Greene in death.
Greene has left to cherish his memory his: Daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and James Earnhardt of Elk Park; son, Phillip Greene of Elk Park; sister, Jane Daniels of Linville; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Karen Greene of Burlington; grandsons, Jackson Earnhardt and Noah James Earnhardt (and grand-dog Roxy); nephews and nieces, Bill Daniels and wife Valerie, Bruce Daniels, Barbie Samsel and husband Kris, Joey Greene and wife, Courtney, Janna Elliott and husband, Ray; great nieces and nephews, Austin, Jacob, Abigail, Zachery, Maddie, William, Weston and Roslynne. Several aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends also survive Greene.
Funeral services for Greene will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Avery County High School Gym with Rev. Bryan Griffith and Dr. Ken Harper officiating. Interment will follow in Tanglewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, in Avery County High School Gym. Greene will Lie in State for family and friends to come and pay their respects at the funeral home beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Avery Schools Foundation for the Jim Greene Memorial Scholarship Fund, 775 Cranberry Street, Newland, N.C. 28657.
