Ollis to face charges in death of infant son

Avery County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a six-week-old infant. The death occurred on Dec. 21, 2011, at a residence outside the Town of Newland in Frank Fire District.

The six-week-old male infant was the child of Jacob Michael Ollis of Avery County and Johnna Taylor of McDowell County. On Friday, Jan. 13, a warrant was issued by Avery County Magistrate's Office charging Ollis, 25, with second-degree murder in the death of his son. Ollis was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 14, by Carter County Sheriff’s Office, where he also faces a failure to appear charge. Avery County Sheriff’s Office will seek extradition of Ollis as soon as the failure to appear charge is disposed in Tennessee. After Ollis is brought back to Avery County, the matter will be reviewed by Avery County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury.

According to Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye, “He'll be over there for a few days, then, if he waves extradition, we will get him back here. If not, we'll apply for what is called a fugitive warrant to require him to be extradited back to North Carolina.”
